Countdown Timer 1.3.0

A friend of my asked me to develop some kind of countdown application that he could use, for some kind of competition I guess. I’ve never worked with DevExpress gauges before so I saw this as the perfect opportunity to learn to use something new. I had a proof-of-concept ready in just a few hours and spent the following days with developing the program to something that could actually be used in real life. The result was an application with the hardly imaginative name “Countdown Timer”!

Features

It’s a simple program, but its goal is to do what is used for, and to do it good, much like VLC is great at playing media files.

  • Countdown timer of up to 35999 seconds, corresponding to almost 10 hours.
  • You can have the application play an MP3-file at the start and/or the end of the countdown.
  • The countdown can be shown in full screen or as a regular window, with colours defined by the user.
  • Press Esc when the countdown is underway to quit it.

Download

Download version 1.3.0 for Windows

Installation

The program uses Microsoft’s ClickOnce deployment.

  1. Extract the ZIP-file.
  2. Open the folder.
  3. Run the setup.exe file.
  4. Done! The application is now installed on your computer!

Chainmail jewelry – instructions

Chainmail jewelry is an old form of art practiced by the old norse people. By studies of burial sacrifices, and some reversed engineering, we have been able to reproduce this kind of embellishment.

The instructions are in Swedish but if you follow the pictures you’ll most likely be able to get the same result.

Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya goes Japan

Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya goes Japan.

The travel path of patrol Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya when in Japan.

Since we are to leave very soon now, I thought you might want to know about our travelling plans. The first part is pretty straightforward but the second part, well, it was a bit difficult to find the exact geographical positions.

Anyhow, Sanzoku no Musume Ronja goes Japan is a Tripline map showing the places we are planning to visit.

We’ll first have some time in Tokyo where we will visit some famous tourist traps and some areas where there are no tourists at all… hopefully.

Then we’ll go to Mijajima Island to meet up with the rest of the Swedish ISTs and to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial.

The third part of the journey is going to the camp site for some IST training, and then scout camp. Yay! 🙂

The fourth and last part is mostly LPP[1] but some onsen is planned along with Kyoto and Nikko.

We thought that onsen might be a good idea after twelve days of scout camp!
And Kyoto will hopefully provide some pleasant motives for photographing.

Notes

  1. Löses på plats, Swedish for “Will be fixed when at the location”.

Regnbågsscouterna

Regnbågsscouterna on Facebook.

Regnbågsscouterna is a network working for an inclusive environment (in Scouterna) in which children and youths feel safe and confident participating.

There’s a network within the Swedish scout organisation called Regnbågsscouterna. You’ve already heard about them if you’re following my blog.

Regnbågsscouterna is a network working for a more inclusive scout organisation in Sweden. Even though Sweden and Scouterna has some of the most inclusive environments in the world, still not everyone feels comfortable enough to speak about their sexuality and sexual identity due to different social stigmas.

To resolve this, Regnbågsscouterna are trying to raise opinion and awareness, first and foremost among scouts and leaders, about these topics. Another task Regnbågsscouterna has engaged in is to participate in different external events to show the society that this is an ongoing work within Scouterna.

What Regnbågsscouterna is doing

  • Making youths feel safe and confident in Scouterna by removing social stigmas related to sexuality and sexual identities.
  • Participating in different external events to show the society the ongoing work within Scouterna.
  • Working for a generally more inclusive environment within Scouterna.

About the badge

The badge of Regnbågsscouterna.

The badge of Regnbågsscouterna, used by scouts to show their belonging to, or support of, Regnbågsscouterna.

The badge representing Regnbågsscouterna is the logo of Scouterna on a rainbow background, surrounded by the text Regnbågs-Scouterna.

Interpretation

The badge has been interpreted in different ways. Some have seen the badge as information telling them that the scout wearing it is homosexual. This might very well be the case but it could also be that the scout is a heterosexual person in support of Regnbågsscouterna.

Therefore, the fact that somebody is using the badge gives you NO information at all about the sexuality of the bearer.

On the other hand, you can almost always regard the badge as an invitation to speak with the bearer about topics related to sexuality, sexual identity, LGBT and repressive social norms and stigmas.

How to decipher a Swedish scout uniform

Swedish scout uniform

Swedish scout uniform for an IST going to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan 2015.

There is a lot of information you can get from a scout uniform. Just like with tracking, the trick is to know how to “read” the uniform.

The regulations for how to apply the badges to the uniform is quite loose in Sweden and open for interpretations. To the right you’ll find the uniform I’ll be wearing. By looking on it you’ll get to know some parts of the regulations based on my interpretation.

It won’t give the whole truth but applying the knowledge to any uniform will give you a head start in your “tracking”.

Right hand sleve

Starting at the right hand sleeve you see three badges forming a circle at the top. These badges are mandatory and tells you that the scout

  • is from Sweden.
  • is a member of WOSM/WAGGGS
  • is from a country in the European Union[1]

The rest of the badges on the sleeve are camps and other events the scout has participated in. The badge of the event participated in first is placed at the top. In my case you see that I participated

  • in Blå hajk, a week long hike wandering the fells
  • in Explorer Belt, an event about exploring and getting familiar to a new country.
  • In the Danish contingent to moot in Kenya… Well not really. I just used it as a place holder. It will be replaced by the camp the scout is currently on, or the camp he/she last participated in. In a few weeks you’ll found the jamboree camp badge here!

Blå hajk and Explorer Belt are two special events (not camps) I’m particularly fond of. That’s why I always include them. I consider one or two special events to be OK to have in excess to the latest camp badge.

Left hand sleeve

The left hand sleeve tells you where the scout comes from/is a member of, except the most basic parts, which is already covered by the right hand sleeve. It might also tell you what the scout knows, and in some cases, his or here statements.

The badges in italic are optional.

Some scouts also add badges from the local scout program to the left hand sleeve. This is in order, even though I skip mine since it gives a more frugally look.

Right hand pocket

A Swedish Explorer Belt belt.

A belt, like my Explorer Belt belt, could also be a part of the uniform.

The logo for The Guides and Scouts of Sweden is embroidered above the pocket.

The badge representing the age of the scout is placed at the pocket cap, sleeve side. This badge is mandatory and often indicates which troop, within the scout group, the scout is a member of.

I have the Roverscout-badge since I’m a rover scout. The new, yet-to-be-distributed, leader badge could be placed here if you’re not also a rover.

The other side of the pocket cap can be used for the patrol badge. My rover team is The Lions, represented by a very pompous lion!

Left hand pocket

This pocket is reserved for different kinds of awards that aren’t made of fabric. The award shown in the picture is the leader award, telling you hat I have finished the training to be a leader.

That’s it!

Now you know how to extract the information from a Swedish scout uniform. Just don’t get surprised if you come to the camp only to find out nothing I have said is followed! 🙂

Notes

  1. Wearing the EU badge simply states that the scout lives in a country within EU. It doesn’t tell you anything about the political opinion of the scout wearing it… Unless it says Skåne/Scania, then it’s probably a statement! 😉

Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya – About the name

The main characters of Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya.

The main characters of
Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya.

The name of my IST patrol is Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya. It is Japanese (of course) and means Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. That is also the name of the protagonist in the Swedish novel by the same name, Ronja Rövardotter. The novel is written by Astrid Lindgren and has recently been adopted into a computer-animated anime.

My patrol decided on the name because it’s a famous Swedish novel made into a Japanese anime, a clear connection between Sweden and Japan! It also gives us an icebreaker to use at the camp, some sort of common ground. We Swedes have a very good knowledge about the content while the Japanese (probably) have a very significant knowledge about the media type and it’s execution.

The anime has 26 episodes of about 20 minutes each. If you want to watch it you could look for Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya at Anime Show.

T minus 7 days or Let the blogging commence!

Tooth brush and ear plugs in the contingent colour. What else do you need?!

Tooth brush and ear plugs in the contingent colour. What else do you need?!

The Swedish contingent contains about 1900 participants, ISTs and leaders. It is the biggest Swedish contingent ever to a jamboree abroad. Shipping that much scouts seems to have caused the travel agencies some trouble, leading us to leave for Japan at different dates.

Myself, I leave from Kastrup, Copenhagen next Tuesday. The backpack is still to be packed, but you could feel that the jamboree experience is getting close.

And in case anyone was wondering, the reason that I abandoned Swedish this year is simply because some of my friends don’t speak it. 🙂

See you in Japan!
